They’re alright. They breathe in deep of this sea’s noxious air, but they persist. Here be monsters, and they loom just beyond the wall of their safe haven. Navy, draped in the mantle of Warrior, idly draws back a bowstring. A solid metal arrow fires into the crowd of Nihilego and dead things on the other side, piercing it and sending ichor sprawling across the sea floor.[break][break]
“Didn’t think this many would show up when I decided to cull the sea.” His admission is sheepish as he turns to Eris. She’s just a child, cast into this darkness under the sea. She has a right to see this place, he thinks, and it’s better that she comes here with him than anyone else. Eternatus’s innards have killed lesser folk in droves, especially during the battle last year.[break][break]
“We’ll have to break through, if we wanna get back up top.” Before fear can set in, he asks her a simple question. “Yo, troublemaker. Your mom knew all about myths and stuff, right? She must’ve told you ‘bout some. What weapon did your favorite hero use?”

[attr="class","eris109"]Being down here makes her sick. Down here in the belly of the beast, nausea rocks her stomach, the act of the hunt making it just that little bit worse as she watches the blood spill.[break][break]

But perhaps the dim light hides her discomfort, the way she drops her gaze to the dagger in her palms makes sure that she can force her hands to be still.[break][break]

"My favourite -" There is a moment of pause. One where Eris seems unconfident in her answer, and perhaps, even a tad confused on why he's asked that question to begin with.[break][break]

"There was a magical stave that anyone could use... It's said that when you carried it, you'd never lose your way in storms or bad weather, even if you didn't know the way."[break][break]

Magical runes. A compass. A self-mending rope. A feather plume. There are many many tools that her favourite heroes have used, none of them truly considered a weapon by conventional standards. Hell, if anything, most of them weaponised their wits to make the best of a situation.[break][break]

Lightning pierces the shadows, illuminating the dark as yet another Nihilego is struck down. Empowered by their bond, Reiner simply overflows with energy, bright blue sparks intermittently crackling off his mane. And though that electricity seems to coil around Eris' hand, it never seems to harm her or make her draw back.[break][break]

"Why?"

“No big reason.” He grins, holding out his right hand. A newly-minted avatar understands little about how their power works, but the warrior closes his eyes and concentrates all the same. Some part of him knows how to do it, like there is suddenly a new limb sticking out of his novel. It’s like it has always been there, always been a part of him, the nerves were just dull until recently.[break][break]
The projection cast into his hands is hard to hold, frighteningly so. It is less a staff and more one long piece of wood at the center of an elaborate structure. Its weight takes him off guard, almost tossing him over the battlement. Power courses through the staff, like he holds history in his hands.[break][break]
Its head hums with power, and mist clears away over the horizon. On some level, it reminds him of defog, but not quite. Visibility is better, and for that he is grateful. It reveals a monster, lumbering to them through the crowd. Perhaps it was once a living thing, but now it is only a skeleton, piloted by Nihilego. He holds the staff out for Eris.[break][break]
“Wanna hold it? I wanna see if I can deal with that guy out there.”

[attr="class","eris109"]Having spent as much time as she does around him, Eris has come to realise that there is a difference between his grins. There are those that simply prelude the corniest of lines and there are those that signal the beginning of him doing something stupid.[break][break]

Manifesting a staff out of thin air most certainly doesn't fall under her scope of expectations. Much less one that somehow nearly knocks him off balance.[break][break]

And with its appearance comes the grand reveal of the area, the unnerving mist dispelled and exposing the true monsters that lie below. Her first instinct is to reel back, her skin prickling with chills as she watches the withered bones shamble towards them.[break][break]

"A- are you sure?"[break][break]

Everything is hitting all at once, and in the moment, her mind focuses on the only real thing she can grasp: Navy's safety. Her hands are outstretched for the staff, ready to take it and find out just how heavy those fairytales must be. Reiner too, seems interested by the sudden creation, his tail swaying from side to side as he leans against her.[break][break]

If she falls, he falls with her. Such is their bond, the main source of power behind the sygna connection that protects them both.[break][break]

“Nothing’s going to hurt you, kiddo.” With his free hand, he ruffles her hair. “I promise.” Not here. Not while he has both hands. Not while his footing is sure. Below, the horde starts to advance. The approach of their giant pushes them to march forward, to make their incursion upon the world of the living and the good and the light.[break][break]
“Keep it close. I’ll show you something you can write about when you’re older and the most respected professor on mythology in the world.”[break][break]
They live in an age of heroes, and just now, a hero sees a dragon that he must slay. Navy raises his free hand, and imagines what will happen if they fall. He imagines the funerals they will have, and Isaac Merlo’s tears. He imagines Kyle’s frown of disappointment when they meet in the afterlife, and he imagines Rocket coming for his town.[break][break]
None of that will come to pass, not after Ironsides and all the rest have sacrificed so much for him. In his hand appears a blade that promises victory. It is twin to Zacian’s massive blade, with which it shares a name. Ascalon, a dragon slaying sword, wielded by Hoenn’s first knight. It is a blade that will inspire stories in generations to come, a blade that seems alive with gentle blue light.[break][break]
“This is Ascalon, and I’m gonna use it to make sure those Nihilego don’t get to you.” It is more than a promise. It is gospel.

[attr="class","eris109"]What makes Navy stumble makes her stagger, legs splaying like a doe on ice as she catches the full weight of the stave. And Reiner sways with her, grunting as he does his best to support her.[break][break]

It's heavy. Far heavier than what her mother had made it out to be. Whatever those adventurers in those stories were on, she needed some of it. Yet, the power that dwells within sings against her fingertips, a kindly warmth reminiscent of a mother's guiding hand taking ahold of her own.[break][break]

"The myths wove you into their own?" That is the only real explanation she has to the way he conjures those objects like pieces of candy in a street magic show. "Of course you would choose a dragon slayer."[break][break]

Of all the monsters that threatened them, Eternatus was the biggest dragon in his life. No one cared about this beast as much as Navy did, and no one would fight as hard as he would to keep it from consuming them all.[break][break]

For a moment, she contemplates the stars upon her sash, the little fragments of light she has dragged down into this dark with her. They protect her with an energy that pulses within all life, a stronger form that Navy now possesses in his own veins.[break][break]

"Don't be reckless." She chides him, reaffirming her grip on the staff with one hand as she hooks her other arm around it. And she'll balance it against her shoulder, carefully pointing her dagger at him with the limited motions of her free hand. "Reiner and I still got fight in us."[break][break]

The Luxray snorts, a smug smile tugging at his lips as he stretches out. And her blade glints, then sparks with a light current.[break][break]

"We'll watch your back."

“Good.” He affirms, smiling down at Reiner. They don’t need words. Their mission is the same: keep her safe. Safeguard the future. There doesn’t need to be anything there deeper than that when they stand united in purpose.[break][break]
“Well…it’s not the old Ascalon.” He feels a sheepish need to clarify, at the very last moment, before he jumps the barrier. “Howard named it. Zar—Zacian and I aren’t real good at naming things.” A man whose name for an Unown was Namey hardly needs to clarify that point.[break][break]
Instead, he’s off. He jumps down, onward and well, into the horde of dead men and their Pokemon. Sharpedo, long dead, their eyes crusted over with barnacles, rush towards him, the first line of defense. They are dead, nowhere near as strong as they were in life. It evens things out. His skill with Ascalon is a thing born of instinct, clumsy, yet practical.[break][break]
In each stroke of his blade lies foreshadowing of what will come as he continues his climb up the warrior’s road. He will be great one day, a peerless swordsman. His blows are like the teething of a baby, struggling to find its footing. He fights, he cuts, and he trusts that he will feel a twinge of energy at his back when Eris follows.

[attr="class","eris109"]Howard? Zar? If Howard named it, then where was he now? Was he okay? After all that had happened? Many questions bombard her, but she finds no chance to loft them upon Navy as he charges right in.[break][break]

And he is clumsy with the sword, swinging and hacking but not quite cutting his enemies down. Force will compensate what he lacks in skill, his will still the mightiest blade he wields on this maddening battlefield. And she watches him closely, her dagger pointing in the direction of those that try to sneak up on Navy from his blind spots as she commands lightning to strike them down without mercy.[break][break]

"Follow him!"[break][break]

At her behest, Reiner dares to venture into the folds of battle, a Rising Voltage lights the area as he charges, slams and sinks his claws into whatever manages to slip past the warrior. Slowly but surely, they will carve their way back to the surface together.

Somewhere along the way, a Pokemon slips free. Silver Bullet isn’t a creature meant for water, yet the steed manages just find beneath the waves. In half a heartbeat, Navy is in the saddle. Reiner and Eris charge, obliterating a monster that was mere moments away from sneaking up on him. Foes to the left of him, foes to the right. He holds his sword with grit and clumsy, instinctual skill and charges.[break][break]
“We’re getting out of here!” He insists, despite the odds. Silver Bullet cries their agreement, the mane that is the source of the name flaring all around him, yet the flames hurt him not. Ancient stories say a Rapidash had to truly trust their rider not to burn them, and there was certainly heat to the flames should Eris and Reiner draw close enough to feel its residual energy.[break][break]
Just ahead is the bestial skeleton piloted by the Nihilego. It lumbers down towards them. Its hand sweeps low, and Navy beats it back. It feels as if his arm is on fire. One hand holds the sword, the other grips the reins tight enough to crush a throat, desperate to stay in the saddle. Were he not dressed like a desperado, he would look like the fabled Pale Rider beaten into the tapestries in his gym chamber.[break][break]
“Hold ‘em steady.” He says to Eris, trusting in Reiner or her to have some trick. Light gathers around Ascalon, here in the bowels of a slumbering god.

[attr="class","eris109"]Were it not for Reiner first being hit by the sudden wave of heat and slowing just by a step, Eris might just have been introduced to how hot a Rapidash could possibly burn. In the instant that Silver Bullet takes the leads, their way is brazenly lit; Both a blessing against that which seeks to trip them and a curse that draws many more creatures towards them.[break][break]

The largest seeks to hunt them, to present more offerings to this endless, hungering sea. Those arms drip with festering flesh, bony digits raking at Navy with layers and specks of half-crusted blood.[break][break]

Hold them steady? With what? Reiner does what he does best, a brilliant burst of electricity rushing past the man and striking the Nihilego. It screeches, slows just that tiny bit even as its piloting of the broken body begins to grow more erratic. But even that tiny bit is enough for her.[break][break]

The stars fade as they close their eyes to her fate, her sygna suit quietly choked out of life as she exposes herself to the elements. A hand reaches out, uncertain in nature, just like the breath she takes. How had she done it? Could she really do it again?[break][break]

No matter what, she has to try. His faith in her burns as bright as Silver Bullet's mane, if not brighter. She grits her teeth as the toxins seep quicker into her system. For once, lets the paranoia eat at her: At first, slow and gnawing. Then tearing at her in larger chunks.[break][break]

He'll get hurt.[break][break]

Purple tints her vision. The sea takes what little she wishes to offer, and some more. But in turn, grants her a vision of the wellspring she seeks.[break][break]

You would lose him if you fail now.[break][break]

The air bleeds red, a different colour beginning to mix into the end's design. And the more she sinks, the stronger that glow becomes. All until it solidifies into an unyielding chain that lunges at the beast and coils right around it, constricting ever tighter and tighter like the hold the sea has around her own heart.

As the chain lashes out, holds a dead monster in place, an eye opens in the darkness beyond the silver light. It is like a wound in reality, a jagged cut that opens like a bleeding birth canal to behold what occurs down in the deep places where logic and good sense suffocate. Another opens, and another, and another, until the darkness seems wholly replaced by magenta cuts, looking out at what might be an interloping god.[break][break]
The Warrior does not care. He has beheld that eye on the face of one he loved, and killed enough of his life to venture forth into that impossible battle. Standing tall atop his saddle, he prepares for a plunge that some would call madness. Light gathers, conjuring from nowhere, a miracle dispensed by crystals some would call a cancer. They gather, and the white streak in his hair contrasts against the dark brown all around it.[break][break]
He readies himself, and he jumps. Nihilego and other creatures of the deep try and move the monster held by the red chain. Movement avails them not. Ascalon grows, grows into a blade big enough to fell a giant. Both hands grip, both hands bring the blade down in a cleaving motion, and the giant is no more. It shatters into bone dust so fine its particles outnumber the eyes surrounding them.[break][break]
Ascalon shrinks, and he holds it in one hand. Silver Bullet circles around Eris and Reiner, a guardian beast protecting its charges. The fiery stallion leaves space for Reiner to help him attack, his horn piercing anything which grows too close.[break][break]
“That’s the biggest one down!” The Warrior cries out, fighting his way back to them. Ascalon is sheathed, and he draws forth a weapon he is far more comfortable with. An ancient warlord of the people that spread Perrserker across Galar named his battleaxe Ragnarok, that he might always remember that there would come a day when even gods died in twilight.[break][break]
No death will come this day, to gods or any living thing. The Warrior’s axe is a tool of close combat, and he cleaves a path back to her. Paranoia threatens to set in, but he is used to it, his steel eyes look upon the thousand magenta cuts and meets them evenly.[break][break]
“We can get out of here, Eris.” He says, mounting Silver Bullet. “Come on. Eris, Reiner, let’s break through.”

[attr="class","eris109"]Drowning is more silent of a killer than one thinks. First, it steals your voice, the screams that might alert another as to the danger you're in. Then, it permeates the lungs, going on further to steal the air you breathe.[break][break]

Her head spins with the growing lack of oxygen. Her every breath caught in her throat burns like a wildfire. But the pressure does not lighten, the Deep Sea sees the cracks in her vessel and presses upon each one. Every gaze settling upon her is a new weight to bear, a chill gnawing at her skin, then flesh and bones.[break][break]

She isn't like Navy. Fear eats her alive, feasting upon her mind even as Reiner haplessly tries to anchor her to reality with his presence.[break][break]

And he growls at the warrior who readies to lead their ascent. Though Eris still hangs onto the Luxray, she's going weak, her eyes shut tight as she leans into him. Around them, red continues to paint the landscape, chains forged from the light and ensnaring any creature that approaches. But an imperfect power wanes with her strength, tiny pieces beginning to chip and crumble off the chains as the Nihilego writhe and struggle against their bonds.[break][break]

No more time to waste on their enemies. They have to surface before she drowns.
